種子島出身の大学生を中心としたコミュニティを運営しています
人口の減少が続く種子島において、これから起こり得る課題に対処できるよう、島外からでも種子島に関わることのできる仕組みづくりを行っています。のらねこでは、大学生の長期休暇にあたる時期（春季3月/夏季8月）に1週間程度の活動強化週間（のらねこウィーク）を設定し、時期を合わせて帰省し島内の中高生との探求活動などを企画しています。それ以外の時期は、月に1回のオンラインミーティングで学生間の繋がりを維持しています。

鹿児島県にある種子島は、国内最大のロケット発射場を擁する「科学の島」としての顔を持つ一方で、鉄砲伝来の地として歴史の教科書に登場するなど、過去と未来が交差する不思議な島です。
国勢調査によると、種子島の人口は1960年の64,532人をピークに減少へ転じ、2020年には27,692人となりました。日本全体の人口が2010年に減少に転じたことと比較すると、約半世紀も早くから人口減少社会に突入していたことになり、その課題の根深さを物語っています。
私たちが見据えるのは「人が減った状態の種子島」です。多様なキャリアパスを求める昨今の進学状況を鑑み、半ば不可避的な若者の流出に対して適応的な視座に立ち、島外からの関わり方を模索しています。2021年、コロナ禍に5人で立ち上げた「のらねこ」は、今では50名規模のコミュニティとなりました。
活動を知り声をかけてくださる地域の方々、専門的な知見で見守り導いてくださる大学の先生や行政の皆様、そして、場所や立場を超えて応援してくださる多くの方々。こうした多くの支えがあり、私たちは活動を続けられています。できることからコツコツと。種子島の未来のために歩み続ける「のらねこ」です。

Leading a community of university students from Tanegashima.
To address the challenges of Tanegashima’s declining population, we are building a framework that allows people to stay involved from outside the island. Our core initiative, “Noraneko Week,” takes place during university breaks (March and August), where members return home for intensive projects like inquiry-based learning with local students. Throughout the rest of the year, we maintain our connection through monthly online meetings.
Message from the Founder
Tanegashima, Kagoshima, is a unique island where the past and future intersect. It is famously known as the site where firearms were first introduced to Japan, while also serving as a “Science Island” housing the nation’s largest rocket launch complex.
According to the national census, Tanegashima’s population peaked at 64,532 in 1960 and fell to 27,692 by 2020. This means the island entered a shrinking society half a century before Japan’s national population began its decline in 2010—a fact that underscores the profound nature of the challenges we face.
Our vision focuses on a “post-depopulation Tanegashima.” Recognizing that the outflow of youth is largely inevitable as students seek diverse career paths, we take an adaptive perspective, exploring ways for people to remain deeply involved with the island from the outside. What began in 2021 as a team of five during the pandemic has now grown into a community of 50 members.
We owe our continued activities to the local residents who reach out to us, the academic experts and government officials who guide us, and the many supporters who cheer us on across different regions and roles. With their support, we will continue to take steady, incremental steps toward the future of Tanegashima.
